I give you a piece of advice: les lettres de mon moulin writting by Alphonse Daudet. A nice book about the provence in the 19 century which describe the french people and the landscape of the south of france. This book is easy to read.

Sartre and Camus
Don't worry about the dates. I am around! My favourite by Sartre was The Age of Reason which I read both in English and French. A great introduction to existentialist dilemmas concerning value and a very good 'thriller'. Camus's The Stranger I also read in both languages -- such indifference! I read Harry Potter too !
If you want to improve your French you can also read the serie "Coeur d'encre" written by Cornelia Funke. The author is German but I read the books in French and it is captivating but not too difficult.
The first book is called "Coeur d'encre", the second "Sang d'encre" and the third (and last) "Mort d'encre". I hope you will like it ! ;)
