This is not at all correct. Irish is taught in many universities around the world, as a regular subject within Celtic and Irish studies. Apart from that there are a lot of people who enjoy learning Irish for personal reasons (heritage etc.), so you will find Irish clubs and private schools especially in the typical emigration countries (USA, Australia...)
I am learning Irish Gaelic myself, as I am a student of Celtic Studies at a German university. In Germany a lot of people are interested in Celtic cultures, and quite a few learn Irish or Scottish Gaelic. Mona

Concentrate on vacabulary and subject matter that is important to you. The everyday phrases we use over and over again in our own language are the one's you will use the most and remember easiest.
This may mean that 'travel Gaelic' may not work for you. Make a target list of high frecuency verbs from your own language and use that as a target list for Gaelic.
