Hurricane
Who of you are experiencing the devastating hurricanes in America? My thoughts are with you ... don't you want to write and tell me about it? Living in South Africa means the concept is totally unreal to me.

Re:Hurricane
Hi, I'm in New york but have friends who lived in new Orleans & Texas. One friend in NO lost everything. He's living with people in California now. Other people I talk to from those areas have been sending photos and mini videos to our communities. It's really sad to see. At least with Rita there haven't been any casualties reported (at least, not at the time I'm writing this) We get some rough weather now and then, but I'm so thankful we don't have to worry about such furies up here! cheers Tia

Re:Re:Hurricane
Hello, I am from New Orleans but presently displaced by Hurricane Katrina. I have been back to New Orleans many times to salvage things and check on my home. You have to see it to understand it. What you see on the news and in the papers does not begin to describe the devastation. I was interested to see that you mention Turkish. I have visited Turkey many times beginning when I was 20 and spent a summer there as an exchange student in Ankara with the Experiment in International Living. I do not speak Turkish but shortly before Katrina hit had made inquires re obtaining a tutor.Several years ago I took some lessons at UNO in their Critical Languages Program. If you speak Turkish or are learning and have tips on good language programs I would appreciate it if you could give me some assistance in beginning to learn the language. Thanks very much.

Re:Hurricane
Hi, I am a refugee from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. You cannot imagine how bad it is there unless you see it for yourself. Entire neighborhoods have disappeared including my own. You loose your home and all of your possessions and so do all of your neighbors. All of the people in your neighborhood scatter literally all over the world. You loose your job and your co workers and your income. You loose your church community and you loose all of the familiar people you saw everyday in your community at the grocery store, the farmers' market, the coffee shop the drugstore and so on and so forth. The places are gone and the people have scattered to the winds. We are fighting to get the proper help from the American government but it is more concerned with waging war in Iraq to increase access to oil reserves than in helping the people in America. More money in oil in Iraq than in the American People. I am living now 100 miles north of New Orleans and going back and forth as often as I can. A totally over the top experience!!

Re:Hurricane
I am an evacuee from Hurrican Rita. I lost my home as well and am now living in Austin TX. They expect several more devastating hurricanes this year and my family has not yet recovered from the last. I lost most all of my belongings and my parents have not yet finished reconstructing their homes, like most people in Port Arthur. The people that stayed through it claim it was the most terrifying event of their lives. Most of those who evacuated say the same because they were stuck on the interstate for over 60 hours without fuel or sleep waiting to be hit by unrelenting an unrelenting storm. One of my friends called me the night before the storm hit. He was stuck on the highway, out of gas, terrified and sleep deprived for over 40 hours. He was only 20 and all alone. He wrecked his car when he fell asleep at the wheel, ran out of gas and his phone died leaving him stranded. I will say we were displaced for 3 months with no where to stay because the Katrina victims were occupying every hotel in the area.
