Latin focuses strongly on memorising grammar tables, verb patterns and application of the rules to unravel a sentence . It is therefore important to teach students how to learn, recall and apply their knowledge in a methodical manner. I teach students to look at any Latin sentence as a puzzle- piece the puzzle together by identifying how each word fits into the puzzle based on its context and sense. Precision and accuracy is key to gaining the high marks. I know how papers and marked and the answers examiners are looking for. I even make my own questions for GCSE set texts when there are no past papers to go as the set text changes every 3 years. The questions I tip and make mirror those that actually come up in the exams. Vocab ulary learning is also a hurdle to be overcome in Latin. The GCSE vocab list comprises 475 words for the Higher Tier exam. I ask students to think about the English derivative to the Latin word and to use this to help them remember the word. I make my ... |

I am a very organized and methodical teacher. I always try my best to meet my students' demands and needs according to their level. The student and myself work together step by step in order to achieve the best possible results. I consider that the student's passion for learning along with my commitment and support are the secret of a successful learning/teac hing program.

If you would like to begin learning Latin from scratch, for students of any age I use the Cambridge Latin books, which you will need to buy (Unit 1, for example, which would be a school year's worth of work for a middle school student or a semester for an older student, is $28 on amazon, and the workbook is $16.). If you are already in a course and want tutoring, I will work with whatever system you are using. I prefer Cambridge, especially for younger learners, for its reading-based and culture-rich approach. Motivated adult learners might prefer Latin for the New Millennium, a more grammar-drive n and very authentic approach. We will decide together the best course for you or your younger learner. |

Young children are able to learn a foreign language in somewhat the same way that native speakers learn it. That is, by immersion. It is good, therefore, to teach young children by means of vocabulary drills, reading, and listening, and give them some speaking and writing. Some things that can assist with learning through vocabulary, reading, and listening are pictures, comprehension questions, and stories that are already known by the children in their native language. Children can learn a foreign language better if they can put images and feelings to the words and sentences, and can associate the new language with people, places, events, and things in their own lives. The teacher can give students opportunities outside the classroom to practise speaking with the new language.
Middle and high school students may have been studying English for many years, so they may already have a considerable amount of English in their minds. Giving students many opportunities to write and s... |
