What I first do is a little introduction to keep know each other, then I usually let my student do a level test and see where we should focus our teaching on.
I usually talk only in Italian, and repet everything in the language of the student to make him/her more confortable with the sound of the language. I usually follow my student even after the lesson, for any doubt, they can text me and I usually answer them as soon as possible.
After 5-6 lessons my students take a test to let me know if there are some problems in the learning process.
E verything is supported by books and on-line stuff.

My approach to Italian classes is very informal. I like to take lessons as friendly conversations , because students are more relaxed and actually absorb and learn more.
At any time, I can focus on a specific grammar issue, but I don't want grammar to be the fil rouge, because I wouldn't offer anything more than a grammar book. What I give more, instead, is feedback, interest, interaction.
