Good Afternoon! I am interested in becoming 'fluent' in sign language for several reasons, both personal and professional. I am an anesthesiolog ist working at a large medical center. I have come in contact with an increasing number of deaf patients who come for surgery. I want to be able to communicate with them without the need to call for an interpreter. It is my belief that by communicating with a deaf patient in their native language I will establish a better repour and level of trust with that person. I have always been interested in sign language and took some beginner summer courses several years ago. I think it is a beautiful language. While in residency, I didn't have the time to fully dedicate studying and practicing. Now that I am finished with residency and working full time, I have more free time. It has always been a goal of mine to learn sign language. Now that I have encountered more deaf patients in my line of work, I am more determined than ever to be able to communicate with them.
