The only language I speak right now is english. I am seeking to learn cantonese and french, as well as a few other languages. Currently, my cantonese is as good as 2 year old's. I'm choosing to learn another language for career purposes.

The reason why i want to learn cantonese and mandarin is simply because 1/6 of the population knows those languages instead of english. rather then to wait for a billion people to speak english, simply go on their side.
and of course for career advancement.

It's a little sad that I grew up in a Chinese family and learned Mandarin throughout my elementary years, yet still left with no Mandarin skills. I want to learn.. or rather relearn Mandarin because I wish to live in Hong Kong and Mandarin is a must. Though Cantonese would be helpful as well, I would prefer to tackle Mandarin first then Cantonese. I understand more Mandarin than I do speak or read it. I would estimate my knowledge to be in the grade 1 or 2 level. I want to improve in every possible way. Dedication to learning the language will be no issue as I do realize the importance of it now and will take it with all seriousness. I'm looking for a teacher that is patient and will teach me actual conversationa l/ colloquial skills, not phrases that do work, but no one says them.

My partner and I have traveled back and forth from Hong Kong for decades and plan to retire there. We would both like to learn properley, the language and culture. We would consider our proficiency level as beginner.
We could dedicate one evening a week to our class and will expect a patient and respectful instructor with a past education and considerable knowledge in teaching to beginners.

I would like to learn many languages because I travel often. Cantonese in particular because it should have been native tongue, but I have lost that language as a child.
I can understand a few words when spoken to me, and am familiar with some Chinese customs and mannerisms having grown up in a Chinese-Canad ian family.
Co nversation, grammar and later on, perhaps even reading and writing.
I have a 9-5 weekday job, so I can meet weeknights and weekends. I will be more available starting in January 2010.
Qual ities that I'm looking for in a teacher... patience (!), easy-going, does have a rough curriculum in mind, and preferably has had previous experiences in tutoring.
