I have a friend who has family in China and we visit every year. I would like to be able to converse with some of his family in their native tongue as well as be able to find my way around in shops and restaurants etc so conversation in probably more important.
I am very much a beginner and can get by with Hello and Thank You but that's about it.
I haven't thought about how much time I can devote yet but I was considering some evening classes so around 2-3 hours a week. I could do more if I altered my work schedule as I am self employed so flexible.
I qualified as a TEFL teacher last year so I am looking for a similar type of approach to what I learnt there, that is learn by speaking the language as much as possible.

I am a Malaysian Chinese girl who wishes to learn mandarin. First of all, I have always been interested in mandarin because I watch Taiwanese dramas for several years. However, I cannot pronounce the words properly nor can I understand conversations above basic level. Besides learning mandarin to improve myself, I am a business student. I understand that one day, I will need to communicate with others using mandarin. I study overseas and will be leaving the country end of August. I would like to have intensive sessions roughly 1.5 hours per session and 3 times per week? I would want my teacher to be patience and effective when teaching me because I do not want to waste time. Mostly focus on how I speak instead of writing because I do not think I have time for that.
