I want to learn Mandarin because I will be living in Taiwan for a year, and I want to make the most of my experience. Also, I think Mandarin is a very important language that can get me far in a potential career in international affairs. I have never learned Mandarin before, so I need to start from scratch. I work full-time teaching in Jhubei (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm) so I would like to have classes that work around this schedule (perhaps 2 evening classes during the week). I am looking for a teacher that is accommodating , friendly, and experienced. I want lessons that will help me learn Mandarin quickly and efficiently, and that give me tasks to complete outside of class so I keep learning.

I am 66yrs old and have lived in Taiwan for two years, My wife is Taiwanese and I am missing out on so many things by not speeking Mandarin. I am now part of a large family and have made Taiwan friends here who comunicate in English , but I wish to learn Mandarin conversation. I have attended Taiwan Normal University for 3 months first in a class of 10 then changing to one to one. The reason being all my class mates were in there early twenties and were in Taiwan just to learn Mandarin and I thought that the age differance and me having another life after classes not just studying would slow the class the down . My teacher disagreed but I changed to one to one . I was told I was doing well and we changed from learning Chineses characters to Pin Yin as My wife said the conversation was more important than spending so much effort in learnig to read and write. So I am a beginner with a small knowledge of some words and phrases and counting. If you feel you can help me I am open to suggestions.
