My fiancee is Maltese-Austr alia. All four of her grandparents were born in Malta. Her mother was born in Australia and her father in Malta. She has relatives in Malta and most of them are not fluent in English as they live in rural Malta as farmers.
My fiancee spoke Maltese at home until she reached 8 or 9 and understands quite a bit of Maltese and can speak some words, but has forgotten a lot. After her father died in an accident when she was 12 she did not hear Maltese spoken much at home.
I would like to learn conversationa l Maltese. I intend to use books and CDs which I have ordered. However, I would like a native Maltese speaker to practice with and to give me some guidance.
I am Irish and a native English speaker. I have learnt Irish, French and German so have experience of foreign language learning. I speak, write and understand French, but I do not use my Irish or German and so do not remember them.
