I am a beginner. I have studied French when I was at the U of MN, but speaking it I am quite shy and uncomfortable .
We had a Portuguese foreign exchange student in 2001-2002 and we have traveled to Portugal several times and plan to continue going there. It is important to our relationship with Maria and her family to at least try to speak their language.
I would like to learn conversationa l Portuguese and be able to read it somewhat.
I would like to meet once a week or perhaps every other week. My husband would like to learn too, but he travels and his schedule is unpredictable .
I would like an instructor that is patient and willing to start slow until my confidence builds with the language

I recently graduated from college with a minor in Japanese. In total, I have taken six years of organized classroom language instruction (college and high school) in addition to studying abroad in Tokyo during the summer of 2002.
Since graduation, I have sporadically participated in Japanese conversation clubs, but feel I need more formalized instruction to not only maintain my language proficiency, but continue to build on the foundation established during my college years.
My short term motivation for beginning formal language lessons again is a trip back to Japan in mid-2009. My longer term goals are to be reasonably fluent in Japanese (focus on conversationa l, written, and grammar skills), and to leverage this skill set for an overseas assignment with my company.
I would like to devote about an hour to formalized instruction time once a week or every other week. However, I am willing to adjust this estimate slightly based upon possible jointly agreed to schedules/pla ns with my teacher.
I n terms of qualities possessed by my possible teacher, I am looking for a native Japanese speaker who has had either formal classroom teaching or extensive tutoring experience.
