I have been learning Portugese through tapes and books as well as conversations with people from/in Angola as well as Portugal. I am engaged to an Angolan and wish to become proficient in Portugese not only for the wedding ceremony but to better communicate with his family as well as teach our children. I have a basic understanding of social communication , some vocabulary, and slang terminology. I am having difficulty organizing the learning given a lack of understanding of grammar and desire to directly translate (which almost never works out correctly). I have a lot of time to devote to learning this summer and will have time following a full-time job as of Sept. I am looking for a teacher with an understanding of the differences in grammar between English and Portugese as well as opportunities to communicate with multiple people speaking Portugese outside of the instructional setting (my fiance will not be in Philadelphia to help me practice what I learn).

I just got back from Rio and I am planning another trip back in early May. It was a real struggle to communicate with the locals and I am most interested in conversationa l lessons. If I only had some basics I would of had a much better time in Rio. I am open to however many classes it takes to get some basic words and phrases down.
