I'm a Chinese who was brought up speaking English my whole life. I have lived in Malaysia, US and in Singapore, and can speak the bare necessities of Mandarin, perhaps to order food and that is about as far as it goes. My aspirations to learn Mandarin is two fold; because it is a necessity, living in a Mandarin speaking society as a Chinese, and because I need to use it for work.
My proficiency covers the extremely basics of conversationa l Mandarin, unable to read or write except for my name. I would like to be able to at least carry on a basic conversation within 6-8 months, and perhaps be able to use it during meeting with clients on work related matters by the 12th month, though this may be a little too ambitious.
I would expect to spend 2-4 hours each on classes, be it 1 intensive class of 4 hours, or two classes of 2 hours each. My concern is speaking first before writing, so I would not expect out-of-class 'assignments' due to a lack of time.
The ideal teacher would be someone who is young and speaks English beyond average. I would expect her to be able to not just converse and teach in English, but engage in intellectual discussions through teaching to stimulate learning. The classes just be thought-provo king and not mundane, and she should be able to engage and connect with ease, finding alternative ways to encourage learning.

The reason for learning Chinese now is preparation. I am going to go to Taiwan and study Chinese for 12 months in September and want to learn some basic skills before I move.
I am a beginner, but know a few basic sentences. I would like to improve everything and would like to dedicate 5-6 hours per week for this (3 hours with a teacher and 3 hours on my own) During my lessons I want someone who is patient and supportive and can help with pronunciation , and give me tips on how to practice everything on my own.
