I am seeking to develop full fluency in speaking and reading Mandarin Chinese, as I anticipate career advancement for this particular skill. My proficiency level can be described as conversationa l in terms of speaking (as I speak it at home with family), and minimal in terms of reading. I would like to improve both of these to the level of high proficiency- capable of discussing complex and abstract concepts. To start, I seek to develop the ability to read newspaper articles practically effortlessly. I am willing to devote as much time as possible to learning the language effectively.

I am a graduate student in music at the University of Texas at Austin. I am a beginner level student wanting to learn Mandarin because of my heritage. I am of Chinese descent (father born in Mainland), but I was never taught Mandarin. My goal is to be fluent and to be able to raise my children to be bilingual. I went to Beijing this summer and studied at the Beijing Language and Culture University in their 4 week intensive course. I would like to reinforce and continue on with my knowledge from this summer. I have been continuing study using Rosetta Stone and am very dedicated to learning the language. I had hoped to have class once a week and tutoring once a week, but cannot find a class that fits my schedule. I prefer a teacher that is very thorough and open to questions from the student, as well as very interested in my personal goals. Strict is also welcomed!
