I have never studied Sinhalese before, so I am definitely a beginner! I am keen to learn it quickly and study hard because I am of Sinhalese decent and want to focus my doctoral research on Sri Lanka. This would involve several trips to the country to conduct interviews and collect data, so ideally I would like to be proficient at speaking the language.
I may leave for Sri Lanka between April and May, so I would need to learn how to communicate with people as a student doing fieldwork (ask them questions, be polite in different situations, continue a conversation, talk about why I am asking questions, etc.) by then. I intend to continue my lessons upon returning and inbetween fieldwork trips so that I may improve my language skills.
Th e time dedicated to my language lessons depends on what the teacher believes I should have to meet my needs. I am taking a break from university for this term (until January 1), so I am flexible until then and am willing to devote most of my time to learning the language.
Qualities I am looking for: dedication and patience on the teacher's part, structure to the lessons (I need to start at the very beginning, which will be a challenge but I am willing to do the work), conversationa l lessons, and a reasonable fee (as I am a student, I am on a limited budget).
