Hello
I want to obtain a reading proficiency in the Greek language for purposes of higher education. I want to pursue an MA in English literature in the US. I have a 1360 in the GRE and a 287 in TOEFL. Though English is not my mother tongue I consider it my first language. I think I have a good chance og getting into a really good university in the US with funding, but have to meet the requirement of a reading knowledge of a foreign language.
The reason I've chosen Greek are several. Firstly, I have an interest in Western classical literature and want to read Sophocles and Homer in the original. Secondly, in my mother tongue proper nouns do not have genders and thus would not be comfortable learning say, French. Tjirdly, when I did my masters in film, some of my classmates were Greek and I really liked their culture and would like to visit Greece sometime.
I have no knowledge of Greek at all at the moment. I would like to be able to read fluently even if I'm not able to speak it.
I'm looking at two hourly classes a week or thereabouts.
The teacher should be learned, motivating, resourceful and patient. S/he should provide me with all learning material.
