I am a complete beginner. I know nothing about the language! Though my mother speaks Mandarin, I was raised speaking only English (and later in life learned French).
I 'd like to learn Mandarin because I would like to be able to travel to China. A friend and I have made tentative plans to go there to work, and learning Mandarin is a great first step.
I'd be prepared to meet a couple of times a week (nights only!) to learn.
I consider myself a fast learner, and I'm willing to put in a lot of effort to learn. So I would prefer a teacher who places more emphasis on this learning aspect, rather than an easy, relaxed, social aspect. Not that I'd want my teacher to be a slavedriver or anything...bu t I think it's important to note that I wouldn't be doing this as a social activity. I'd be here to learn.

Currently, I would be classified as a complete beginner. I have a desire to learn this language because I would like to surprise my girlfriend and her family, and be able to communicate with them in their native tongue. I would be willing to dedicate four hours two nights a week to this project until I was fluent enough to converse. I would like to find a teacher who is patient, and thourough.
