I'm taking a trip to Ukraine to meet my father and siblings. It was my, let's say first-and-a-h alf language as I grew up speaking both Ukrainian and English. However, for some reason at the age of eight I decided to rebel and speak only English. In retrospect- bad move.
Anyw ay, I've lost most of it. My vocabulary is probably less than 100 words at this point. I think my accent is probably still decent- but I'd like to be able to have at least a rudimentary understanding of it because I'm unsure of how long I'll be staying. And, you know, it'd be kind of nice to talk to my family. Or whatever. No big deal.

My ethnic heritage is Ukrainian. My grandparents emigrated from southwest Ukraine to Alberta, Canada, in the early 1930s. My mother, her sister and brother were all taught Ukrainian as a first language but quickly lost their ability to speak and understand Ukrainian once they began attending English-langu age schools.
I would like to learn Ukrainian for two reasons: first, to better my appreciation of my ethnic background, and second, to have the ability to communicate with some of my older, Ukrainian-spe aking patients as I work as a Registered Nurse in Edmonton, Alberta.
I would like to learn conversationa l Ukrainian, as well as the ability to read the language in popular media such as newspapers and magazines.
I would like to have language lessons twice a week.
I would like my teacher to be very patient with me and enjoy teaching the language.

My father was half Ukrainian, half Polish, my mother is French-Canadi an, hence the native language. I have always wanted to learn, for my personal development and hopefully travelling to Ukraine and Poland one day and finally 10 years ago i started private lessons with a person with whom i had been put in contact with through the Ukrainian Credit Union in Ottawa. Unfortunately , at one point he was too busy with his job and he had to put a stop to our lessons. Since then, i have taken several group courses, and i am presently taking courses, but i do not see any progress because we do very little conversation, either with the teacher or amongst ourselves. As far as my proficiency is concerned, i feel i am more than a beginner, i can read, no problem, in fact up until last Christmas, i was singing in a Ukrainian choir here in Ottawa, although i did not get all of what i was singing. I am quite familiar with the grammar and the verbs, although i have problems with the cases, don't we all!! I need improvement in conversation, there is no better way to improve but to speak the language. I remember those private lessons, the teacher used the flash card system and it was very effective, i still remember what i learned from those lessons despite all those years. I am presently taking private lesson in Spanish and it is going very well, being able to speak it in every lesson. If possible, i would be able to dedicate one hour a week per lesson, plus the time at home for assignments. As for the qualities i am looking for in a teacher, well of course patience with an aspiring learner would be great, plus also dedication.

I graduated from university with a degree in Russian studies. I am currently studying abroad in Russia, but I would like to learn a second slavic language: Ukrainian. I can read and listen to Ukrainian and understand about 70%, however, I would like to focus on my speaking skills. I have a small vocabulary in Ukrainian and almost no knowledge of grammar, so I would like to focus on grammar, vocabulary development and, most importantly, speaking skills.
