I used to consider my self 'proficient' in Mandarin, but many years away from China and learning other languages has dropped that level a fair bit. I wouldnt consider myself a beginner, though I cannot say for sure how advanced my comprehension /speaking level is for sure. As is with languages, a bit of practice brings it rushing back so that is what I am looking for.

I was born in raised in Sunny California where i attended the University of California Berkeley and received my B.A in Economics with a minor in History. I am a beginner who wants to be able to converse fluently in Mandarin. Written Mandarin is not too much of a priority. I deal with Chinese people most of the time, and to be able to converse with them in their own language will definitely be a plus factor.

I will be moving to China at end of 2004. I have 1st level Mandarin proficiency already but now need to progress rapidly to business level.
I am interested in speech and litening only; no reading or writing required.
I learnt 1st level Mandarin using the pinyin system but am willing to be flexible.
As this is very important to my business career I am willing to put in considerable hours per week to reach my desired level by end of 2004.

In 1991 I completed an MA, Honours in Mandarin Chinese; after that I worked in China for around 18 months. I would like to improve my Chinese - spoken, reading and listening comprehension . I would like to read and discuss newspaper stories with my teacher on a one to one basis. I would prefer to have a native speaker teach me.
