Dear teachers,
My name is Tan Chye Soon. I am a 33 year old chinese male. The reason why I want to learn Vietnamese is because of this girlfriend of mine who is a Vietnamese, whom I first met some six months ago. Initially, I thought nothing would ever blossom out of the normal friendship we first had due to the difficulty of us having to understand each other's language (I do not know Vietnamese and she does not know English and Chinese). After two meetings, we decided to give it a try to see if this normal friendship could develop into a boy-girl relationship. Normally we would converse to one another through a little Vietnamese language/dict ionary book she had and by pointing the words in the book to express ourselves to one another. After she returned to Vietnam, I bought a book titled 'Complete Vietnamese' and started to learn some Vietnamese words and meanings. It is very difficult trying to know the meanings of the words let alone trying to form a sentence and pronounce the words as Vietnamese has many different tones although the spelling of the words are same. Try as hard as I could, I am only able to learn some of the meanings of the words and able to communicate with her via short-message -system (phone). However, I could not pronounce the Vietnamese words based on the book that I had bought. I think it is of vital importance that I learn Vietnamese as I believe communication is very important if I want our relationship to turn well. Currently, she is also trying to learn Chinese so that she will be able to communicate with my family. Recently I just returned from a trip to Ho Chi Minh to visit her and she introduced her friends to me. Much as I wish to communicate with them, I could only sit and watch them communicating . I realised that learning the meanings of the words and pronouncing, speaking or saying them are two different things altogether. However, I must say that this trip to Ho Chi Minh is really worthwhile as it brought myself and my girlfriend closer.
I hope that I will be able to speak and converse with my girlfriend after I have completed the course as my most important factor for this course. I believe the teacher that I will have for my learning Vietnamese is professional enough to decide if I have the ability to speak and converse with any Vietnamese freely. As for the time, I need a face-to-face flexible schedule as I need to highlight that I am a taxi driver and tends to tire out after a day's of driving.
A s for my lessons as long as the teaching environment is conducive for learning and ultimately I am able to know the meanings of lots of words and able to speak, pronounce and converse them correctly. The teacher must be patient, not out to just earn my tuition fees, be passionate and willing to guide his/her students in their learning. If the learning is like a friend to friend style of teaching and not leaning towards the Ministry of Education style of teaching would be great.

I have been living & staying here in Singapore for more than 3yrs. My husband is a Norwegian working here in Singapore. I am so keen on learning Norwegian (Norsk) as soon as possible. Live in person, it doesn't matter if in a class maximum of 2 students with me. My proficiency level is beginner.
