I am worse than a beginner. In fact, I have seen the Icelandic alphabet, and I think they are making UP letters. Bleh. My husband has lived in Iceland for over 15 years and guess what? I soon will be too. I need survival skills, such as about 50 down jackets, a large yak and saddle and to speak the native tongue. Barring that, some brennavin (which I have most likely spelled wrong and I have somehow ended up with a bottle of distilled cod instead).
Honestly, I need to learn the language basics as best I can BEFORE I get there so I don't make a fool of myself, or at least so I can do it in the Icelandic tongue.

I am looking for a teacher of Icelandic in the chicago area. I have been studying on my own for approximately a year now and would like to further my skills. I am a beginner but would make every effort to become fluent. I'm having difficulty in grammer. I can devote as much time as needed as I have a deep repect an love for the language. The ideal teacher would have the ability to help me build a solid foundation in grammer and enjoy teaching as much as I enjoy learning. I am a recent college graduate who will be studying at the University of Iceland next year. I have studied the Iceladic Sagas and Old Norse for a year and a half, and want to learn modern Icelandic. I have some knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammatical rules, but would pretty much need to start from scratch. I would like to grasp basic grammar/vocab ulary and begin to learn conversationa l Icelandic. I would like to meet once a week, possibly twice, from the begiing of June 2004 through the end of August, 2004. I am looking for a natice Icelandic speaker with a good understanding of how to teach a language to a beginner. I am hoping that s/he will recommend some good Icelandic text books for me to purchse.

I am a beginner in Icelandic. I first visited the country last fall and am developing some scientific collaboration s with Icelanders, and some friendships as well. I would like to learn the language to facilitate these contacts, and to challenge myself mentally. But I find it very difficult, and could particularly use help in grammar (verb tenses and declensions), reading comprehension , and conversation. I currently spend 15-20 minutes per day at it and would like to spend 1-2 hours per week with a teacher, either on-line or in person. It would be helpful if lessons could explain and supplement the exercises I'm trying to do in Neijmann's and Einarsson's books.
