Description |
I would consider myself a 'novice' in Mandarin. I studied it for two years in college (2001-2002), and spent 6 weeks in China (2002), but I have not had the opportunity to speak, listen, read, or write much of it since.
Now that I have settled in this area, I would really like to get back into it. I work for a global firm, and would definitely have use for the language in my career (Tax Accounting/La w). Not only that, I really loved my time in China and would like to return someday. I wish I would have been able to keep up on what I had learned before, but I wanted to wait until I had time to dedicate to it. I finally do now.
I need improvement in all areas. Reading and writing were especially difficult, as I have always been more of an orator (even in my native language, English). That said, it is my hope to someday be able to communicate with my colleagues in China, both conversationa lly and in writing.
I would like to dedicate as much time as possible. I think I can fit in at least an hour a day (Maybe 10 hours a week) for study/practic e - and/or a lesson.
I would like a native Mandarin Chinese speaker with patience. Also, the teacher should be aggressive and want to push me as a student by teaching proper, natural speech (not classrom speech).
T hank you.

Description |
I am an absolute beginner in the Persian language. I do not even know anything about the alphabet of the Persians. My son and I want to know Persian primarily for career enhancement. My son plans to enter the navy in about one year. We both see the importance of knowing a strategic language spoken by a potential enemy state to our native U.S.A. I was in the Army for many years and I noticed the significance of knowing a strategic language to a military member. Knowing the language of a potential enemy makes a military career much more flexible for the member. As for me, the importance of knowing a strategic language seems to nearly not be said. Nevertheless, I will admit that I would one day want to translate farsi into usable information for any American who might one day need to converse with persians. Furthermore, farsi might give me some insight to learning languages which are rumored to have developed from farsi, such as pashto, dari, maybe urdu, etc. These strategic areas of central asia are of great significance to my country, the U.S.A. I might very likely want to teach one or more of these languages some day. My son wants this skill to allow himself a greater degree of skill and flexibility once he is in the navy in about 1-1.5 years. Thank you for your attention.

Description |
I am a total beginner. I am going to China on business at the end of June and would like to be able to have a little understanding of the language and communicate some. I don't need to be fluent. I am looking for an evening class, once or twice a week. I think that in person instruction is more effective than other types of programs but will do homework and work with CDs as a supplement. I tried working with some CDs before I went to China 2 years ago but could not catch on. I have studied French, Italian and Spanish with success, but Chinese is so very different!

Description |
I would like to freshen up my german conversationa l skills. I believe it would be helpful in my career as an actuary and computer programmer with a multi-nationa l company. I started taking german classes when I was in 6th grade and continued all the way through high school. I was taught Hochdeutsche Dialekte in school and then when I was a Junior in High School I learned some Schwäbisch when I lived with a family in Ravensburg in southern Germany. I was somewhat fluent at the time in basic conversationa l german. I also tested out of 8 credits at Drake University. Unfortunately I have not used it since. I can understand others if they speak slow enough, but I have a hard time remembering enough vocabulary to speak it myself. I have done some translation in both German and Dutch on the job, but it is time consuming and I need a dictionary to help get me through. I would like to become fluent again at the very least.
