I've had some Japanese classes where I've learned some phrases and some kanji. I know the katakana and hiragana characters pretty well and want to learn Japanese to a point that I'm fluent in it and am able to carry a conversation in Japan and navigate my way around the country well. I a currently a High school student in the 11th grade and want to go to Japan right after my senior year of college. I am looking for a good teacher with plenty of experience and capability to teach a person all that would be required for living in Japan which includes how to conducty one's self given many siruation. This would go beyond basic speech.

I am looking for lessons for my son Zach. He is 13 years old and a 7th grader at a Catholic school in a Chicago suburb. He has been interested in the Japanese culture for years now. He reads books about Japan, fact and fiction all the time, has bought Japanese music CD's and has even purchased Japanese language CD's with his own money. He's a very good student, always on the honor roll and testing in the top 2% of kids nation wide in his age group. He would love to learn Japanese and I would love to be able to give him the chance to try.
A lot would depend on the location of the teacher and the days available to teach. I'm a single mother who works full time so it would be a matter of my being able to get him to a lesson each week. I do want the lessons in person, I think this would be the best way for him to learn rather then any of the other options. I do like the idea of a teacher native to Japan since he is so interested in the whole culture and not just the language but would be very open to any teacher who could teach him Japanese and maybe give him a little more insight into their culture.
I guess the best scenerio for us would be one lesson a week and take home work for him to work at on his own until the next lesson.

I have previously completed a year of Japanese at the high school level. In addition I know how read and right in Hiragana & katakana. I am currently working on basic Kanji. I am learning Japanese for the reason that I am interested in the language and the culture, and hopefully be able to teach what I learn to others. I want to teach either English in Japan or Japanese in the United States. Some areas in which I may need improvement would be in grammar, conversation, and pronunciation . I hope to dedicate as much time as is needed to learning Japanese and becoming fluent. Some traits I am looking from in a teacher would be that they make the lessons easy to comprehend and enjoyable. I would like a teacher who has a positive attitude and has a deep understanding of the language and the culture from where it originated.
