Description |
Greetings! I spent a semester in Denmark back in College and made a few good friends during my time there. I go back about once every two years to visit (I have family in Germany so Copenhagen is a short flight away) and my danish friends always ask 'When are you going to learn Danish?', half-jokingly . Well, now that I am done graduate school and have a job with a stable schedule, I can finally devote the proper amount of time to studying the language. I've always liked the music, food, and cold overcast weather in Denmark, so enjoying the language seems like the logical next step.
My goals are simply to be able to have a general understanding and contribute to casual conversation with my friends so they don't have to always speak in English whenever I am around, even though they are more than comfortable doing so.
I would previously dabble in Danish now and then but cumulatively have about six months of reading and writing practice with a few online books. However, my speaking and listening comprehension is quite poor so I would be interested in lessons that assist those two areas.
I would like to devote about an hour a week to audio tutoring. Due to time differences (I am US Eastern Standard) this would probably be in the morning around 7 a.m. I would probably devote an hour a day to other studies such as further listening comprehension and/or reading/writi ng.
I am generally open to any kind of lesson. These could be practicing reading from dialogues to gain new vocabulary, to unscripted dialogues where we talk about topics that are timely or interesting and forces me to search for words with the tutor assisting me and correcting pronunciation or better word choice.
I hope this was informative and please contact me if you have any questions.

I minored in Chinese and spent a year living in Beijing to attend Tsinghua University's Chinese language program. In June 2009 I took the HSK and tested at level 6c intermediate. It has been over three years since then, and my Chinese has steadily faded. I am eager to bring my speaking, reading, and writing up to where it was before and higher. I am hoping to sit for the HSK again towards the end of 2013 and would like to score higher than before.
Self study can be difficult and I need a teacher who will help structure learning activities that I can complete and help me identify weaknesses while also providing new and advanced material to learn. I am hoping for at least two in person/video chat lessons per month and a sufficient amount of reading or other study material to work through on my own.
Speci fically, I generally understand Chinese, but have trouble forming my own responses quickly. I am also forgetting how to write many characters, but this is work I can do on my own. Reading assignments would be appreciated along with some general discussion to assist on comprehension .
I work full time, but can spend about 3 to 5 hours a week on language learning. Since I travel a lot for work, some lessons may need to be via Skype. I am pursuing this because I want to preserve the language skills that I have already invested a great deal in developing. On a side note, I tutored English to three students while living in China, and am more than willing to provide assistance in return.
