Description |
Hi, I am interested in learning Norwegian mainly for reading, and secondly for an upcoming (but no date) trip to Norway. I have been studying on my own for several months and am fairly satisfied with my progress, such as it is. I am retired so I have a fair amount of time. I am no stranger to language learning as I worked some 40 years as a translator of German and Spanish. I also read French, Portuguese and some Italian. In high school I studied Russian but did not continue with it. I also studied Latin at one point. I am comfortable with some grammar in my studies. I am interested in having good pronunciation and understanding spoken Norwegian so I would like to have some real contact with a teacher. Cultural information on Norway would also be interesting.

Description |
Hi my name is Michelle I am 16 years old (soon to be 17) and I come from a Russian heritage. My goal is to learn to become more fluent in speaking, reading, and writing in Russian. My entire family was born in Odessa, Ukraine and immigrated about 25 years ago. I am the first of my family to be born in America but as a kid I somewhat refused to speak Russian and so my parents would speak english with me. I really regret that decision now that i'm older. I started taking Russian language classes at the Jewish Community Center this summer but I am not fully understanding everything that is being taught. One of the reasons why is because the class has a huge age and level difference among all the kids (who are all in elementary school) and the class is also very russian based and is made to teach young, fluent Russian kids which makes it very hard for me. With the course that I've been taking I've taught myself to read and write a bit more fluently but I still need more practice. I also wish to be able to write cursive and learn proper grammar. As far as speaking, I understand at least 85% of what is being said in a conversation. I learned most of the words from hearing my parents and family speak when I was growing up. I always know the words in my head that I want to say, the only issue is I have a problem getting them out and saying them. I'm also really shy when speaking with my family because I sound like a three year old and they begin squeezing my cheeks. I'm willing to dedicate a lot of time into learning as long as it fits well with my school schedule as well. I'm looking towards to either one on one with a teacher or in a small group who have the same level as me. I'm looking for a teacher who can give me the learning materials that will help me the best and get me on the right track. I am also hoping to have a more English to Russian based learning so that it will be easer for me to understand.
