Beginner. I have been in intensive language training for 10 months for career purposes. I am not very good at anything, but conversation is my biggest weakness. I am looking for 3 hours per week of 1-on-1 conversation practice (1.5 hrs each on Sunday and Wednesday?).

I am a beginner studying Mandarin on my own using a commercial DVD set. I am learning Manadarin as a personal challenge, just because I want to. I would like to meet with a tutor once per week face-to-face as I think conversation is going to speed this process along. I would prefer a tutor with actual teaching experience.

I lived in Xiamen and Shanghai, China, for a year, but I worked within English-speak ing firms most of the time. So I have a very basic understanding of the language and yet liked to learn and (here's the important thing) USE what little Mandarin I would learn. I loved how the people would really appreciate my effort to speak their language, so now I want to learn how to engage a little more in everyday conversation. I’m not interested in a 'textbook' lesson in grammar or memorizing hundreds of vocabulary words that I won't use; rather, I’m more interested in being able to ask about the prices of products, talk about times, dates, transportatio n-related conversations . I am planning to return to China on a trip in 2006 and would like to have some ability to speak when I get there.
