Proficiency Beginner,
I have been to Thailand 3 times in the last couple of years. I have been studying Thai language on and off for that length of time. I can understand some words but not enough to be comfortable. I do not currently know how to read or write Thai language.
I want to learn and become good enough so that I can converse with my friends and family in Thailand to some extent.

Ellisande is essentially a complete beginner at Thai, having picked up no more than he could in a week of vacation. He is looking at beginning classes either Spring or Summer 2006.
In the short run, he desires to learn (in order of priority):
a ) Enough language and associated culture in order to properly show gratitude
b) Tones, which will be his biggest stumbling block
In the longer run, he wishes to (also in order of priority):
a ) Become conversationa lly competent
b) Improve his reading skills.
