Dear Prospective Teacher,
I am interested in learning Mandarin Chinese for several reasons. First, I enjoy learning a language for its own sake; my wife is from the Netherlands and I have slowly learned some Dutch over the years. I derive pleasure from speaking it.
Anothe r reason is that I believe that--after reading The Chinese Century--Mand arin will be a helpful language to know in the coming decades. I work for an international company and although the chances of my being sent abroad are quite small, you just never know what opportunities may arise.
Fii nally, I believe that I have some basic, intrinsic ability to pick up foreign language sounds. My wife's family has complimented me on my pronunciation .
During my enlistment in the US Marines I was sent to Vietnamese language school where again, I had no problem with pronunciation . I enjoyed learning Vietnamese and was fascinated with the use of tones. I was disappointed that I was subsequently not sent to Vietnam--all for the best as it turned out!
At this time I have had no experience with Mandarin but I am strongly considering purchasing a set of Pimsleur language tapes. I like the efficiency of interacting with the lessons as I commute to and from work.
I imagine that for me, attending a Mandarin class in a small group, no more than once a week, would work best for my schedule. I am interested primarily in developing skill in conversationa l Mandarin; however, I would also want to eventually learn to read and write it.
I am looking forward to contact from prospective instructors.

I am a beginner. I want to learn mandarin because my girlfriend is chinese and it is necessary to know mandarin in order to communicate with her and her family. Itwill also help me in my career as well. I would like to concentrate on conversationa l mandarin first, but i would eventually want to learn how to read and write. I am not a very audible learner, thus it is hard for me to learn from my girlfriend. I would definitely need some sort of structure in learning this language to be effective. I am dedicated most of my time to learn mandarin as it is very important to me. I need my teacher to be patient and dedicated to help me learn this new language. My first language is vietnamese.

I am a beginner learning basic chinese because summer 2006 I go to Taiwan and study their for a year. Maybe we could set up something where we go over lessons on the weekend or a day or two a week.
