Description |
Hello, my name is Jean Ren. I am a senior undergraduate student at Cornell University double majoring in economics and Asian studies. Because I have always been interested in Japan and have a love for almost everything Japanese (food, music, pop culture...), I started my study of Japanese immediately upon entering university and took Japanese courses up until last semester, Spring 2010 of my junior year. For that semester, I studied abroad at Sophia University in Tokyo for 4 months, and thus had to switch from Cornell's Japanese curriculum to the one offered at Sophia University. My last Japanese course completed at Cornell was JAPAN3301, labeled as 'continuing intermediate Japanese'. The textbook we used was 'An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese', which we finished half of. At Sophia I placed into 'Intense Intermediate Japanese', which used (and finished) the same textbook, but to be honest I felt this course was extremely poor in comparison to the ones I took at Cornell. It was unorganized, the instructors were apathetic, and there was very little emphasis on speaking and listening. It just did not live up to the quality of the courses I was used to at Cornell, to the point where I am afraid that my Japanese ability may have even declined in some areas. I desperately wanted to take and pass the JLPT 1 test this December, but was not prepared for what a joke and waste of time my Japanese instruction at Sophia would be. I have many textbooks, Kanji books, JLPT books, and an electronic dictionary at my disposal, yet try as I might to self-study I feel that no matter which method I try to take, it is always extremely inefficient. I'm looking for a private Japanese teacher to gauge my current ability level, and from there help prepare me for the JLPT test (if it's near impossible for me to be prepared for level 1 by December, tell me and I can change it to level 2). Because I have a busy course schedule this semester along with a job, I prefer online instruction through video and emailing because it would be more efficient. Also, I am pretty sure there are few if not none private Japanese tutors available in Ithaca, NY.

Description |
For practical reasons, I wish to learn French and/or German in order to eventually study or live in France and/or Germany in the future. While that dream has yet to be realized, at least financially, I hope to use my knowledge for advancing my career here in the Philippines. Personally, however, I am very passionate about learning as much as I can about these two languages just because. I am a beginner in both these languages but already have taken some classes for them. I believe that a language is not something one learns through endless study but through constant practice and so I realize that my biggest obstacle is the lack of immersion (i.e. conversation) as I think that grammar and vocabulary are auxiliary components when it comes to learning any language. I am willing to dedicate as much as an hour or more everyday until such time that I feel confident of my proficiency. I am looking for an instructor/tu tor who shares the same interests (literature, philosophy, movies, art, music, etc) as I do to make the lessons easier to absorb. It would be ideal to have 'informal' sessions where the instructor and myself would simply converse about any topic and he/she would use our topic of conversation as the context for teaching grammar, pronunciation , etc.

Description |
Hey, I'm a 16 year old male, I enjoy Japanese and find it a challenge, i can get my self to start studying but cant find the resolve to keep it up. I think its because i don't have a proper program or method of doing so. I usually find legitimate websites to study off of and make use of them. I know very basic Japanese. I'm only interested in Romaji and speaking the language before i learn katakana and hiragana, and kanji is the last thing i want to learn. If you are a Japanese teacher fluent in English i will be very happy to learn under your wing and abide by your - reasonable - teaching methods.
Thanks for Reading!

Description |
I'd like to take Japanese up again with out attending university classes.I would like to be proficient especially in conversation because it would work with any career I choose to take. I studied it for 6 years at high school, one year abroad in Japan and one year at university.I would probably like to do one, one hour class a week with self study between those classes.
