Description |
I want to learn Russian for career advancement. Though I have learnt many languages including french, spanish and many Indian languages, I have never studied Russian before. There are many consulting opportinuties in my field in the Russian speaking countries of the former USSR, and it would be an asset for me to be able to work there.
I would prefer to learn from a native Russian speaking person to get the correct pronunciation habits from the start.
My preference is for one-to-one classes for flexibility and speed of progress. In terms of time -- up to 5 hours per week would be ideal.

Description |
I am a lover of languages. I have learned Japanese and Korean years back, so together with English and my native tongue Filipino (Tagalog), I know 4 languages already. But it seemed not enough. I wanted to learn another language. Italian and Russian were options I was considering. After careful thought I'd have to go with Russian. I am drawn to its complexity, level of difficulty. It's a challenge for me.
More than just tucking language after language in my belt, and more than just because of my love for languages, I guess on a more practical side, I guess, I also want to learn Russian because of my growing interest in the country. I want to meet people from there for casual talks, personal meetings, and the like. I have developed quite a handful of friends that I sincerely want to meet. Some of them have difficulty saying things in English and so it becomes incumbent upon me to meet them halfway.. to learn their language so we could communicate better.
Now in terms of my level of proficiency, I guess I know quite a few words of greetings, useful phrases, but I need to study more in a more structured environment. I want to be forced to speak it so I retain it. What better way to do it than in a formal classroom setting coupled with informal talks in a social setting. If that is not available, how about online?
Th e way I begin learning a language is through DVD instruction first, then I go with music. I learn vocabularies fast and sentence structuring through music of popular artists of that country. Then I go with DVD again, and then surf website for online instructions, grammar, pronunciation and I learn about the country--- its customs, traditions and histories, and culture, in order to immerse myself with the consciousness under which the language is used. History shapes language and use of language shapes personal histories and perceptions of the person using it. So, I guess that is it.
My next big leap now is: in order for me to really learn is to get my self in a classroom setting (or online) armed already with useful words, phrases, and lessons learned on grammar structuring, and pronunciation .
I can dedicate an hour or two to studying languages. For as long as it takes.
My teacher has to incorporate elements of formal and informal talks, histories of the country, tourism, what kind of a people are they who are using the language and so on. It is an immersion to studying the people using the language, and not just learning the language per se. S/he has to be patient and more detail-orient ed in his/her approach. Oftentimes, s/he could introduce elements of music and the arts to further ingrain the language in the student's memory. How a word is spoken, and how a word is sung (as part of a lyrics). There is more accomplished when studies are incorporated with a bit of entertainment .
