Hello,
My name is Jennifer. I am looking for a tutor in Ukrainian for conversation and language study. It is for personal reasons, not professional - my father is German-Ukrain ian (family is from Lviv) and was fluent in a few languages, my mother is an American. I have grown up in a multi-lingual household in US and UK, and myself speak have studied to fluent and intermediate- mid levels, respectively, French and German. My UK husband does not speak any language other than English, so I have not been able to hold onto the skill set required to keep these languages 'living'. The most challenging aspect of Ukrainian for me has been the alphabet and the grammar - I require proper instruction which will cohesively associate the alphabet and grammar with pronunciation . My earliest and most frequent exposure to the language was as a child with my father and grandmother in conversation, not through education or formal study.
Regarding instructor 'qualities', I am not very concerned about whether or not someone is 'officially certified' in Ukrainian, some of the best teachers are not certified in their native language. I do need an instructor who speaks English well, and understands the cultural nuances, and history of the country. Vocabulary for fine art/ art history and religious studies would be a plus. My current research, a book on Orthodox iconography, requires me to connect with members of the academic/cler gy in their native languages - it would also be a plus if the instructor was familiar with Orthodox Christianity (Ukrainian, Russian, or Greek).
If you are interested in providing instruction, I would like a quote per hour for one-to-one services. From experience (i.e., studying german with a tutor), two-hour teaching blocks are the best for me. This is a long-term endeavour, and I am committed to learning the language properly so I may speak to my family members with ease, as well as conduct academic research with respect to the culture and environment. If for any reason an instructor is looking for 'an exchange', I might consider this as I have some experience with teaching the English language to non-native English speaking students in England at University (and have CELTA certification through International House in London which was a requirement for my formal lecturing job in the UK). I have been a university lecturer in the US and UK for most of my career, and recently moved to Cyprus full-time, in 2012. At present, I am a full-time academic researcher and writer. My schedule is thus flexible: I could meet with an instructor in any of the main cities, though prefer Limassol town, or would welcome a home-study arrangement (with transportatio n costs added to per hour fees) at my property, which is in a quiet mountain location, 15 minutes north of the Amathous area of Limassol city.
