I am a beginner. I want to learn vietnamese because my fiance and his family speak the language. Also I want to learn the language to teach our future children and to be able to talk with future in-laws. I mostly just want to be able to hold conversation. I haven't had any classes in this language yet. I want to dedicate as much time as possible to learning the language. I am looking for an instructor who is patient and explains things well.

I am a graduate student at UCSD, working toward a doctorate in anthropology. I have recently become quite interested in northern Vietnam, and will be going there this summer. Hopefully, if all goes well, I will end up doing extended fieldwork there in the future, examining issues of migration. For now, I would eager to begin learning Vietnamese, and hope to find a teacher/tutor to help me with this goal. I am very much a beginnner. Thanks!

I'm a beginner. My wife is Vietnamese, but refuse to teach me the language. When I go to her family parties (a lot of them) sometimes I feel left out because they start speaking Vietnamese. I want to surprise them when I speak some sentences to them. Also, I really felt out of place when I went to VN last year and could not talk to any of her friends. I tried the tapes and books to learn words, but the tones of the language I think is the key to learning the language. I need someone to help me to learn the proper way to pronounce the tones and words. You cannot get that from a book or tapes.
