Description |
I would like to learn to speak Thai. My mother is from Bangkok. I am planning a trip in November with my 4yr son and my Mom. It will be the first time her family has seen him and 8 years since they have seen me. I want to be able to communicate with them. My Mom works 12 hours a day, so it is difficult for her to teach me. I would perfer a private lesson, if possible, maybe my son can try to learn to if you do not think he is too young (3 1/2 now). Please let me know what the fee is or what schedule you can work out. The weekends would be best since I work and my son goes to preschool. Thank you for your time.

Description |
I am a novice. I want to learn Thai because I have been to Thailand twice and have absolutely love it there. I feel that I'm at a disadvantage when I can not understand a language. That is what caused me to learn to speak fluently. Now I want a new challenge. I have tried the Rosetta Stone program but it did not satisfy me. I know that in order for me to actually learn Thai, I must speak with people others who speak thai better than I do and use it constantly.

Description |
I have visited Thailand once so far and spent a month in Hang Dong, Chiang Mai. My father, step-mother, step-brother, and half sister live there along with other extended family and friends. I hope to make my visits more annual and would love to be able to communicate with my family as well as the locals in their native language. I never realised how much written language is used until I couldn't read anything! :-)
I know a little bit of thai and can sometimes pick words out of sentences or ask for directions but I never know if my grammar is correct or if I'm communicating well enough for someone to understand me. (Hang Dong yu ni?) I've had to pull out the pen and paper for doodling communication s on a couple of occasions and ofcourse playing cherades can help! I can count but I have to think about it first. I would also like to know more about the culture as well so that I am not accidently impolite through my actions. I.e. Do not pat someone on the head because it is an insult, where as I am used to a pat on the head as a good thing. What to do and not to do in a temple and the general things associated with etiquette.
I feel I need improvement in all areas. I've learned most of what I know from asking my family to translate things for me but it's hard to learn from them when they are in Thailand and I am here, and also when I do not have anyone to speak with so that I can keep up on what I learn.
I would like to dedicate atleast a few hours per week to learning this language. I have a very flexible schedule so long as I can inform my work ahead of time.
The qualities I am looking for in my teacher are patience, directness, and flexibility.
It is very important to me that I learn this language fluently. I understand it may be a lifelong lesson and I know I have life long family and friends to share it with.
