Description |
I am looking for a tutor to teach my 12 yr. old daughter Japanese. She is very interested in the language and has been trying to teach herself. She would be a beginner.
One hour a week would be sufficient for her needs at this point. I would like this to enhance her life, therefore, I would prefer her to have a teacher that makes the learning fun.
We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, Jill

Description |
I would describe myself as a beginner when it comes to Japanese. I can read hiragana with very few errors, a little bit slow, and can recognize some very basic kanji. My writing skills, which have not been used in almost two years, have deteriorated quite a bit and I often forget how to write hiragana even though I can easily recognize them. I have difficulty pronouncing some sounds (specifically those containing r's) with fluency. Even though I am a beginner, as long as I study properly, language comes easily to me.
I would like to learn Japanese because I have been fascinated with the culture ever since I was a very young child. Currently I am interested in Japanese books (full text), very interested in magazines and interviews. I enjoy participating as much as I can in youth pop culture. I have been to Japan twice, and the biggest thing I miss when I go to Japan is being able to speak with locals, especially in shops, or band-members at shows, as I am a very social person and love to communicate with people around me. I would love to be comfortable in speaking with Japanese natives. Secondly, I plan to attend University in Vancouver for a Japanese major, but am not able to do so for the next year, and would like to get a head-start on learning it now. In my studies I would also like to be able to compete in speech competitions, and the more practice, the better.
I need improvement in everything, but especially conversation. I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist and when I am not confident that I am speaking properly I tend to avoid speaking, which I don't want at all! So probably, I would like to work on my spoken Japanese the most, but I need the lessons to be well-rounded as far as grammar, written text, and comprehension goes as well.
As far as time dedicated to my lessons goes, it's more of a question of finances. Ideally a language should be practiced/tau ght on a daily basis, but unless you are in a school situation this is difficult to achieve. The best I could hope for is twice a week depending on the cost of lessons. As for time I would personally dedicate to my lessons, I would like to review twice daily -- once in the morning before my job and once in the evening before bed, where memorization and information retention are strongest.
The qualities I would like in my teacher would be someone who is supportive, as I am usually very hard on myself and push myself without any further coaxing. I would also like someone who is professional but very willing to listen, and adaptable to my learning needs. Furthermore someone who can teach from very basic Japanese to advanced Japanese would be preferred, as in future (University) I will be tested on language material.

I like studying languages, I have a diploma in foreign languages.
