I am a beginner, and so I cannot speak or understand any Mandarin.
I want to learn it because I hope to move to China someday.
I am looking to spend about 3 hours a week (divided into two days). However, if the teacher suggests that more time is needed, then I am willing to dedicate more time.
I am only looking for private tutors, and one that is patient, helpful, experienced, and effective.

I'm barely a beginner learning Mandarin. I took Mandarin pinyin lessons in the summer of 2007 to learn how to pronounce the sounds of the language.
I want to learn Mandarin for a few reasons. Firstly, I'm good with languages. It's great to have different languages under your belt and even better to know a language from the western and eastern sides of the world. It's easier to get a job knowing more than one language. Almost all my friends speak Mandarin as well and it would be interesting to know what they talk about. I'm also interested in Mandarin pop music and have learned a few songs (though to a teacher I'd rather just say the song instead of sing it.)
Dependi ng on the course, I'd probably want 1-2 hours of lessons per week.
In a teacher, I look for friendliness and someone easy to talk to. If I miss doing some work, they'll understand if I have a good reason. Flexibility would also be a plus as I'm juggling school and a part-time job.

I am aiming to improve my Mandarin as I would very much like to do business in China, and also as I encounter a great number of Chinese speaking people in my city and while travelling.
I have taken up Adult level 4 at Langara College in Vancouver, but this was two years ago, so I am quite rusty.
My primary objective is to generate enough comfort to engage in verbal discussions with confidence and thereafter to improve my knowledge of characters.
A frequency of about one lesson per week to start would be ideal with the understanding that I will be doing work between classes to keep the momentum going.
In terms of teacher qualities, I am hoping to find someone who has the following:
A desire to make learning fun - likes to smile and enjoy teaching.
Mandarin as a first language.
A solid grasp of English to facilitate porting of ideas from English to Chinese, and vice versa.
Compl ete familiarity with pinyin.
Abil ity to teach outside of normal business hours.
An ability to design suitable lesson plans based on identified learning objectives.
The ability to provide/sourc e the tools and materials needed to maximize the value of the learning.
