I do not know any Mandarin or Japanese at this time. I would like to learn Mandarin or Japanese so that I may teach English as a second language overseas. My goal is to live and work in an Asian country.
I also have two friends of mine, both from Hong Kong, who need to learn English. They are native Cantonese speaking, and any information you could give to help them learn English would be appreciated. I am trying to find them a tutor also.

I am a beginner and I want to learn Mandarin. We have Rosetta stone Mandarin levels 1 and 2 and I have been using this but it doesn't compare with learning from a person. I am also not very far along in this study. My husband and I are going to be living in an area where Mandarin is dominate within the next two years and I want to be extremely efficient before we arrive. Well, at least survival: locations, able to give and recieve directions, feelings, weather, family and culture domains, food, shopping, etc. I would like to learn all areas of the language but conversation and reading would be good to focus on first. I will have a lot of time to devote to learning in the Fall and Spring of this year as I will be mainly staying at home raising our one child. I am able to start at the begining of September 2007. I am looking for a teacher who incorporates songs and other non-standard methods of teaching. I can learn in more formal settings so some formality and standard teaching methods would be okay for most of the time but I need change and variety when learning as well. I would prefer to work with a woman who is sensitive to the demands of being a parent and wife.
