I live and work both in Singapore and Jakarta for a prominent Indonesian company. I joined them in a senior position in July 2013, and after 10 months it's clear that English alone is not enough for me to lead my large team.
I need to be able to carry out business conversations and presentations in Bahasa Indonesia. I'm a rank beginner right now: I can manage simple questions and sentences on the street, but nothing more.
I can only take lessons on weekdays (Mon-Thu), since I'm back to Singapore every weekend. I work in Northeast Jakarta, and live in the Sudirman area, and can either have the teacher come to my apartment or come to a mutually agreed location. I need flexible dates and hours, since I also travel a lot for my work. I'm happy to pay a flat monthly rate, so the teacher doesn't lose if I'm travelling.
I would like to find a fully bilingual English speaker whose native language is Bahasa Indonesia. Preferably someone who already has good teaching experience or a structured course to rapidly advance me through conversationa l Bahasa to a much more proficient level within 6 months or so. That may seem ambitious, but I will work very hard, practising every day, because it's critical to my job! Building vocabulary and an understanding of nuances in expression and idiom is very important to me, since I will also need to read and write business and technical correspondenc e in Bahasa Indonesia.
A teacher who is also clued in to regional differences in Bahasa accent and word usage would be a bonus, as would someone who knows modern expressions/ slang used by speakers between 20-30 years of age. Still, I will happily speak to any teacher that contacts me, because paper qualification s alone are not enough to predict how well we can work together!
I am also very interested in understanding the culture and history of the language, but that is not a primary goal.
