My wife and I are interested in becoming fluent speakers in Mandarin Chinese for primarily religious reasons. We have a basic knowledge of tones and sounds but need help practicing conversation and growing our vocabulary. We also need help with proper sentence structure including grammar. We would like to spend 2-4 hours per week in primarily conversationa l instruction. Another 2-4 hours of homework assignments would be expected. Although the emphasis will be on spoken language (using pinyin) we would also prefer to work some with simplified characters and start to read, though this is not crucial. A Beijing dialect is preferred, though not imperitive.
We are looking for a tutor that really enjoys working with english speakers and is patient. We are willing to travel 30 minutes per one-way trip, up to 4 times a week, if the tutor cannot come to us.
We already have lots of written material, including texts and cds. We want to practice with a native speaker that can identify our pronunciation problems and help us fix them.
