Description |
I spent 14 months in Hellmand Province Afghanistan. 7 months in vacinity of the city of Garmshir and 7 months in Marjah. I got pretty good at speaking the basics and i picked the language (Pashtu) up pretty fast. I think the language, the culture, and the people of Afghanistan are very interesting. I also want to learn the language and maybe get a government job later in the future after i learn a couple more languages. My proficiency level is beginner and everything i know in pashtu is very informal. I need improvement in everything i want to become fluent in the language. I'm willing to dedicate as much time as needed or as much time as the teacher is willing to spare to learn the language. i don't really care about the qualities of the teacher. as long as the teacher is willing to teach. im pretty exited

Description |
To Whom it May Concern,
I am seeking a Pashto language instructor for career advancement. I graduated from law school in May 2010 and will be taking the February Florida Bar Exam. Upon completing (and passing) the Bar Exam, I will likely be traveling overseas to the country of Afghanistan as a lawyer-mentor with a private US contracting group. The said company has contracts with the United States Army and other military & government organizations in several different countries. Because my initial proposal was to employ in Afghanistan, I will be better suited for the final offer for the position if I am able to have a basic knowledge of the country's most spoken language, Pashto.
My proficiency level is an extreme beginner. I have not experience with Pashto whatsoever and very little knowledge of the Arabic language in general.
The areas with which I would like to focus on are as follows: 1). A basic understanding of the language, 2) . Emphasis on the conversationa l aspect of the language, 3) . A basic understanding of the proper grammar of the language.
After speaking with others who have learned from the Pashto language as beginners, I believe I would need about a 2 month period of time and dedicate 3-4 days/week or 12-15 hrs/week. I have completed 7+ years of higher education and the one thing I am certain about is my learning style; therefore, I know I need to put in long hours, more repitition per week for a shorter time period as opposed to shorter hours, few meetings per week for a longer time period.
As far as the prospective teacher I am seeking, I strongly prefer to have someone whose native language is Pashto and speaks near-perfect English. I have found in previous language courses that the English barrier for some teachers can be the result for failing to fully understand the language I am learning. Thus, it is mandatory that my teacher have proper English & grammar so that his/her translation from the Pashto language to me is smooth & accuraate. I prefer a teacher who has a background or strong understanding of the Afghan law & legal field as this will be the area with which I will be servicing.
As far as the prospective lessons are concerned, I would prefer to have something fast paced & interactive. I am able to best retain information when I have to repeat what has been taught to me by either oral methods or written methods, therefore, I request to stray from the lecture-orien ted lesson plans.
In closing, my work will be require me to engage with Afghan nationals on a daily basis. Although interpretors are provided for every employee of the company, I would like to come to the table with a better understanding of the language & ability to communicate myself, if ever needed. In addition, the knowledge and understanding of the language will help to add preference to my candidacy as these positions are competitive.
Thank you for your time & consideration .
Kind Regards, VH
