I moved home to Canada 3 years ago after 25 years of living and teaching English in Italy. I taught in many schools including my own. My last few years there were dedicated to private tutoring. I found that private tutoring and catering to the individual needs of each student made way to huge progress in learning English. Now that I have been teaching English online for two years, I can say that teaching English is facilitated greatly by using the computer. With the use of Internet, Skype, MSN messenger and the Virtual Classroom, teaching English has become my dream come true.
I would require my students to use “Essential Grammar in Use” by Raymond Murphy, an excellent self-study reference and practice book. This is optional but only to their advantage. If they are intermediate and advanced students, I have great material for guided open conversation. The internet has endless sources of material, as well, which is the fun part. I also give my students thinking homework or simply fun homework. For example, this may involve finding a picture of Grandma and telling me all about her. I also encourage them to think in English in their quiet moments.
The key to teaching is by making it both fun and interesting to learn. I encourage my students to use their imagination in the many games I have created. I know I can make them talk and laugh at the same time and by doing so, they don’t even realize they are talking! Obviously, there is that serious side like getting the verbs and prepositions mastered, not to mention those difficult phrasal verbs.
I have a Canadian Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Physical Education and a TEFL certificate from the Bell School of Language, Norwich, England. I moved to Italy when I was 23 years old without knowing a word of Italian and now I am fluent. I have also raised a bilingual daughter. These valuable experiences in life have helped me not only to be an excellent English teacher but have also given me great understanding of the difficulties and challenges of learning a foreign language.
I come from a large family of 8 children. I have family and friends all over the world. Having traveled extensively, I truelly love meeting people and learning about their culture.
