I am a native English speaker who studied Mandarin to degree level at Oxford University. As such I have a perspective on learning Chinese as a second language which most native speakers of Mandarin do not have.
I employ a wide range of materials, both print and multimedia, and extensive experience working with people of different abilities and learning styles.

What are the benefits of learning Chinese?
M andarin Chinese is fast catching up on English as the lingua franca of the world. More people speak Chinese than any other language and already more websites exist in Chinese than in any other language. We understand that in order to learn a language properly you must also have a wide understanding of the culture, so we include more than just language teaching in our classes. Students can expect to explore many areas of Chinese history and culture as an enhancement to their studies.
What is your teaching schedule?
For 1-1 tutorials, office hours are prefered (Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm), but evenings and weekends are also possible.
What course structure do you follow?
Th is depends on what your own goals are. We aim to provide a bespoke service tailored to each individual student's needs. You can work towards a qualification such as Mandarin GCSE or HSK, or focus on particular aspects of the language such as travel, conversationa l chinese, business chinese or preparation for studying/work ing in China.
Can I study as part of a group as well as 1-1?
Yes, we run weekly courses in the centre of Bristol depending on the demand. Lesson prices are cheaper than 1-1 tutorials, but payment is required up-front for the whole course.
I' ve heard that Chinese is a difficult language to learn; should I expect to find it a lot harder than European languages which I have studied before?
Th e answer to this is yes and no. Grammatically , Chinese is one of the simplest languages in the world, with no inflections, tenses, verb agreements etc. However many people find the tonality and pronunciation challenging at first, and reading and writing is indeed very difficult. Our courses take into account the unique challanges which native English speakers encounter when learning Chinese. With the right teaching and a bit of effort, we believe anyone can become competent in the language!

Cost varies depending on the kind of course. Typically for 1-1 tutorials I charge £34 for a 2 hour session on a weekly basis.
