I use a whole language approach to help students learn English. Home language study assignments are fun and exhilarating. Lessons are webbed together following the individual students language requests. I make a point to access materials that are readily available and free(librarie s,museums,gove rnment centers etc.)to my students in their communities. This keeps students actively engaged on a daily basis complementing what we do online every week. I believe students conceptualize language faster when required to use multimedia sources repeatedly. |

For prospective English students "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White is a good example of how my method would look like. Although Strunk and White are concerned with style and usage, a rather advanced topic in any language one undertakes to study, the structure of my lessons are very much based on this invaluable little book. I begin by providing a good concise explanation of the rules of say, the subjunctive mood, when is it used and what are the proper forms, illuminating the whole with good examples. Moreover, I demand that the student ask me questions or raise concerns about what I and just explained. The next most important thing is practice. At least 80% of learning anything is practice through repetition, a somewhat tiring task, but absolutely necessary. Then, the student is asked to apply what he has learned in previous lessons as the course goes along.
