More about Italian verbs

by Cinzia Di Gennaro

Verbs are words involving doing or being, easy to recognise in English because you can put 'to' in front of them - 'to live', 'to be', 'to speak', 'to pay', 'to have', etc.

Understand that Italian verbs fall into three conjugations depending on the endings of the infinitive: 1) -are, 2) -ere, and 3) -ire.
In a dictionary, you will find Italian verbs in their infinitive form (so their endings will be in are, ere or ire).

In English personal pronouns ('you', 'we' or 'they') are usually expressed and put in front of a verb to show who's doing something.
Recognize that Italian verbs are conjugated in the various persons, numbers, and tenses by adding the proper ending to the stem. So it's the different endings that indicate who is doing the action represented by the verb ('I', 'you', 'we', etc.).

That is why the personal pronouns (words for 'I', 'you', 'we', etc.) needn't be expressed all the time and are usually used only for emphasis.

Note that in the third person plural the stress falls on the same syllable as in the third person singular form.
