The 'AY' and a short review of ' Si & Ang '

by TaGaLuGin Info

'Ay' is said to be the equivalent of the English verb 'to be'. It is commonly used in formal speeches, literature, etc.

Let's concentrate on using 'ay', so that we could easily connect this with the normal arrangement of English sentences (i.e. Subject first, predicate next. The subject-predicate pattern).

Example (Halimbawa):

Si Monelli ay isang employee. = Monelli is an employee.(subject here is 'Monelli')

( Si – you connect this with singular personal names, either name of a person [Claire, Charles, David], of an animal [Garfield, Lassie, Scooby Doo], or of a character in a movie [Frankenstein, Oscar Wilde].

Isang – coming from the word 'isa', which literally means 'one', isa becomes isang (adding ligature 'ng') because it modifies the noun describing it... ok, simply remember it is an indefinite article that means 'a' or 'an'. Only used with singular objects )

More: Si Charles ay isang hari. = Charles is a king. (subject here is 'Charles')
Si Maricris ay isang secretary. = Maricris is a secretary. (subject here is 'Maricris')

Ang “Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone” ay isang movie film.= The “Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone” is a movie film.
( Ang – the definite article, the equivalent of 'The' )

More: Ang employee ay si Monelli. = The employee is Monelli. (subject here is 'The employee')
Ang movie film ay “Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone” = The movie film is “Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone”. (subject here is 'The movie film')

Ang isang employee ay mabait. = An employee is kind. (subject here is 'An employee)
(Since there is no Tagalog equivalent for 'An / A + noun', i.e. using indefinite articles instead of the definite article 'The', we connect 'Ang + isang + noun' to imply that the subject is indefinite)

More: Ang isang movie film ay maganda. = A movie film is beautiful. (subject here is 'A movie film).
