(1) Proficiency: I have been working through Tschenkeli's Einfuehrung in Die Georgische Sprache and will have completed this phase on my studies (i.e. I will have translated all the lessons, exercises and readings) by mid-November.
(2) Purpose: I am a graduate student with a knowledge of several other languages. I live in Washington, DC. I expect to travel to Georgia for several weeks in connection with my studies as early as the summer of 2008. At that time, I will need to have conversation skills suffient enough in Georgian to discuss my academic interests and, secondarily, to 'get by' as a visitor.
(3) Area of Improvement: Conversation (aural and oral skills), particularly in a university setting (e.g. conferences, libraries).
(4) Time to spend: This depends on how much time it will take for me to reach my goal of making myself understood and capable of conversing with colleagues. It will also depend on the per-hour cost of the tutorial sessions. A couple hours per week may be reasonable. Currently I spend about 30 hours per week on learning Georgian.
(5) Qualities for instructor: I would prefer a native speaker who is in the Washington, DC, area and who has language-teac hing experience. After the first couple sessions, I'd prefer the instructor and I speak only Georgian (i.e. an 'immersion' technique).

I am a beginner. I work for UBS in Chicago and will be sent to Hong Kong for an assignment next year. My wife and I would like to learn cantonese to help us to communicate in the region.
