Re:wowowo... what's going on here? Are you still around, MtG?
Hi Mind the Gap,

I agree with you completely. Too many people seem to be pretty well ignoring the board topic area headings, and it makes it really hard to find what we're looking for when we want to find it.

Any ideas what we can do? Keep your eyes peeled for new messages in the Internet Technology board. I'm going to see if I can stir up some problem-solving there.

Re:Immigration
Immigration:

In the U.S., we want immigrants to come do all of the work we don’t like. We want them to do it very cheaply, and then we want them to go away and not claim any of the benefits of being part of our society.

This results in farm workers who harvest tomatoes and lettuce for Taco Bell, for example, at a penny a bushel. Of course, minimum wages is $5, but the workers are here illegally, As Truman Capote noticed, "The problem with living outside the law is that you no longer have its protection"

So living in utter squalor, for 2 cents a bushel – a drop in the bucket,– workers could eat healthy and harvest more vegetables. But Taco Bell, a billion-dollar corporation with huge profits, won’t pay two cents, and their workers suffer because even their standard of living here is better than starving back home where there is no work.

As long as these are immigrants’ only options, anything we do to try to stop illegal immigration is spit in the wind. There is nothing we will ever do to an illegal immigrant that is worse than starving– even if we shoot them at the border. Laws and enforcement are like treating cancer with aspirin.

We have to address the problem. We have help other countries to solve their economic problems. Economic pressure drives workers to more prosperous countries. They’re coming here to escape starvation at home.

But we are also part of the problem. Our profit-greedy corporations force workers to compete for the lowest standard of living, and as consumers, we support those companies that keep their costs low and gives us better prices. Taco Bell is a very popular fast-food restaurant here (and I really miss their food). But we need to make principled choices as consumers. We can’t control the decisions companys make, but we can use our consumer dollars to support companies that pay their workers healthy wages, even if that means that our own food will be a little more expensive. I’d much rather pay a few cents more for my Taco Bell taco than to have to continue boycotting their food.

je sui desolée que je ne parle pas francais, mais, c’est mon opinion sur l’immigracion—since you asked.
