Re: how to master the verb phrase easily?
Hello Jack,
which sorts of verb phrases do you find very difficult to understand? Would you provide an example or two of such verb phrases?
(“Mawkish” means “excessively sentimental” — is that how you’d meant to describe those verb phrases?)

Re: Need help with a understanding the following Spanish phrase
Hi Laura,
“harvestman” is another name for the arachnid “daddy longlegs” („Weberknecht“ in German), so I suspect that harvesting is unrelated to the translation. Another meaning of «chichina» might apply: that of «excremento humano», which if valid could lead to “… a lazy grandfather who has stopped doing [expletive] for his grandchildren” as a translation.

Re:Need help with a understanding the following Spanish phrase
Hi Anne,
I would need more context (perhaps the full paragraph - lol).
Chichina can refer to harvestman in some Spanish cultures.
Therefore, the sentence can translate to:
But..., as destiny would have it, he has converted to a lazy grandfather who has stopped harvesting for his grandchildren.
Now, do not quote me on the above because I am not 100% sure. Spanish is my second language, and although I can speak fluently and understand it clearly when it is spoken; reading and writing Spanish is another story.
Hope that helps :),
LG
