Have you spoken to your Navy recuiter? There is no way to beat the language training you'll get once you get in. Six months, total immersion; you'll be speaking German or Italian 24/7. I had a number of friends when I was in the Air Force who had been through the Defense Language Institute, and these people were fluent. When I was taking Chinese, I went up against DLI students in the annual speech competition, and there just wasn't any touching them.
Of course, the down side is, The Navy will tell you what language they want you to learn. Even if you go in speaking solid German, they may decide that what they want you to know is, who knows, Korean or Arabic. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but if it isn't what you want to learn to speak, it isn't what you want to learn to speak.

Someone to teach me Italian Toni
Hey! I want to join the Navy as a German and Italian translator, so obviously I need to learn German and Italian :P I know some, so if anyone wants to write to me in both Italian and English so I can learn, and also teach me new words, etc, please e-mail me! I am NOT a Gold Member!!

Looking for a penpal for cultural exchange
I am a single female 45 year teacher with 3 children aged 20,16 and 14. I have travelled overseas several times and plan to take several months of long service leave over the next 2 years. Am planning to travel throughout Europe and the Americas. I live about 100 km north of Brisbane Australia. It is a beautiful beach location. My hobbies include all water sports, reading, and the theatre. I'm studying my Masters at the moment in Professional Development. I would be interested in learning French, Italian and Spanish. I have a little French and Italian already but need a great deal more practise. Looking forward to hearing from genuine people interested in sharing cultures.

So I will not be able to really understand any English speaking country.
Maybe therefore I consider myself more tricultural,that means I feel spanish, german and chinese, in that order.

their culture and adopt in many cases their way of thinking.However this has not happened, I must confess, with my English.Maybe because English is such an international language that you can learn a standard without going to any English speaking country,or even be ever in touch with native speakers.But I consider it is a pity for myself. ....

Yes,I think you must adopt a big part of that culture,if not you cannot really speak and understand the people of that country or region.
When I learned German I was also studying their behaviour and what is funny (in both meanings) for them, etc.
This is now more a need for me since I'm studying Chinese.I could not speak their language if I would not try to introduce myself in ...
