Unlike Japan, in this country it's not as vital, I was learnt to say 'thank you for the meal' after eating which most children are told to. Before eating though it's not so much of an thing to say like 'Itadakimasu' We normally say 'Thank you' when a meal is given to show apperciation and politeness to the food given. Also you could say 'This meal looks very nice' when given the food to show respect to whoever prepared the meal.
Instead of "Itadakimasu", in English we say "Thankyou"
