It's interesting with the dwarfs. In fact, the Russian for a 'dwarf' is 'karlik'(an extremely short adult person). Yet, we call the dwarfs in this fairy tale 'gnomy' (gnomes). Gnom is perceived by Russian speakers as a fiction character from west european fairy tales. A gnom is rather a tiny (proportionately developed) human than a dwarf. Sometimes people say 'gnomik' instead of 'gnom' to show that it is a tiny creature.
